posted Oct 24, 2014, 10:57 AM by Grant School

Many of Grant Community School's students attended the second annual Urban AgFest at Parrish Middle School’s learning garden on Thursday, October 23, 2014.

The event celebrated everything farming and growing and featured over 20 booths, tasting tables and activities for students, teachers and the entire Salem-Keizer community.

“SKEF is pleased to celebrate Oregon’s bounty during National Farm-to-School Month and there is no better place to do that than at Parrish Middle School,” said Krina Lee, executive director of SKEF. “Connecting school gardens with agricultural career opportunities promotes our region’s workforce development and increases the business capital for emerging businesses.”

There were many activities for students including tours of the aquaponics greenhouse,  food tasting, strawberry DNA extraction, and even making smoothies from bike blenders. Sodexo also provided lunch for all attendees and featured their A-Z salad bar.

The Oregon Beef Council, Oregon Dairy Council, OSU Crop and Soil Science, Marion-Polk Food Share, Life Source Natural Foods, Oregon Department of Agriculture, and Oregon Department of Education, and many more were present to show the importance of agribusiness and local farming. In addition, the Walmart Foundation presented SKEF and the Marion-Polk Food Share with checks totaling over $70,000 to support their work in increasing community access to fresh, wholesome food.
